Here in early 2019, a great deal of the national attention is focused on the interrelated issues of the border wall, sanctuary cities and states, and illegal immigration. And laws like this one in California that prohibit law enforcement from asking about a person’s immigration status is a perfect example. It’s no exaggeration to say these topics have driven the biggest wedge between the political Right and Left since the Civil War, arguably since we declared our independence from England. So, what are some of these things that are sparking such passion today?

Why Immigration Policies Started

As the population of the country grew it became imperative to regulate how many people were settling within our borders, and from where they were coming. It was also necessary to establish an ordered path the citizenship. These were needed for the Federal Government to meet its obligations under the Constitution, which include:

  • Apportionment of taxes
  • Allocation of members in the House of Representatives
  • Determining eligibility for President

However, as the Democratic party shifts farther towards socialist/communist ideals they have thrown little things like the rule-of-law to the wayside.

Ignoring the Law

To be clear, not “ignorance of the law,” but outright defiance of legally adopted statutes. One study shows that as of May 30, 2018, a great swath of states, counties, and cities are subverting ICE in their duty in enforcing immigration laws. The tactics the Progressive Liberals in these areas employ include state and local laws prohibiting law enforcement agencies from asking about a person’s citizenship status during traffic stops, refusing to respond to 911 calls from ICE officers under violent attack and declining to honor detainer requests to hold suspected illegal aliens to give the agency a short period of time to investigate whether or not the individual needs to be taken into custody.
Then there’s a new law that came into effect in California in 2018 that prohibits law enforcement officers from inquiring about a person’s immigration status. In fact, it goes so far as to ban police in the state from cooperating with ICE regarding deportations, except in a few limited circumstances.

Tragic Results

Another point of contention is the crimes committed by those in this country illegally. Those who want to shield these immigrants will brush this argument aside as “insignificant” or a “nonstarter.”  However, as then-Attorney General Sessions noted in 2017 “The illegal immigrant crime rate in this country should be zero, every crime committed by an illegal alien is, by definition, a crime that should have been prevented.” Which means, by way of one example among many, University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbets would still be among the living.

Final Thoughts

Those who are pushing the liberal agenda are quick to point out that immigrants were, as history shows, a vital part of building America into a great country, widely considered the best in the history of the world. They are absolutely correct. However, their willingness to lump the illegals in with the legions who passed through Ellis Island or waited their turn for a green card is the greatest slap in the face possible to those men and women and their descendants.
