Everyone who pays attention to politics has heard the most exciting part of the most recent Democratic presidential debate, which occurred after the event was officially over. Sen. Bernie Sanders offered his hand to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who immediately spurned the offer. She accused him of calling her a liar on national TV. He accused her of calling him a liar. The anti-social socialist civil war has begun.
The dispute is over a private conversation that the two senators had just before the election cycle started in which Bernie was alleged to have told Warner that a woman cannot win the race for the president of the United States.
CNN first reported the story that many suspect the Warner campaign leaked. Bernie denied the story. Warner confirmed the story. The two clashed during the debate about it and then afterward, indiscreetly as a live mic was present.
The AP is reporting that the spat has leftists nervous about the ramifications. While the clash was inevitable, since only one candidate from the socialist wing of the Democratic Party can be left to challenge former Vice President Joe Biden, the squabble between the two former friends and allies has some people nervous.
“Now the race’s most progressive candidates are fighting over the politics of gender, and regardless of who prevails, the party’s most liberal wing is nervous the ensuing fallout could torpedo its once-ascendant ideals. That’s something many see as the worst possible outcome at the worst possible time, with the lead-off Iowa caucuses barely two weeks away.”
The problem is that the tit for tat between the two most leftwing politicians now running for president will not benefit either one of them. Indeed, it might benefit candidates that the progressive wing does not like.
“A brawl on the left might ultimately push undecided voters to more moderate candidates like former Vice President Joe Biden and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who have sought more centrist policy solutions. It could also end up helping President Donald Trump’s reelection bid.”
The horror. The horror.
The fact that Bernie and Warner will shortly be tied up at the Senate impeachment trial and thus taken off the campaign trail with the Iowa Caucus looming does not help matters. The situation is seen as helping Biden and Buttigieg, candidates from the establishment wing of the Democratic Party. The two will be able to campaign unimpeded while Warner and Sanders will have to rely on surrogates and skype to get their messages across.
Some analysts, seeing conspiracies everywhere, wonder if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arranged things thus in order to give Biden a boost. Both Sanders and Warner have threatened Biden’s status as a front runner. Taking them off the board, no matter how temporarily, could protect the former vice president, seen by many as having the best chance to defeat Trump.
Michael Moore, the leftwing documentary filmmaker, has slammed Elizabeth Warner, claiming that her attacks will have the net effect of reelecting President Donald Trump, according to Fox News.
“Elizabeth & Bernie have appeared in my films. I love them both. Why Elizabeth chose to stick a knife in Bernie’s back is beyond me. At a time when job #1 is to remove Trump, how did this help? My new RUMBLE podcast The Sad Downfall of Elizabeth Warren.”
Two theories exist about the private meeting between Warner and Sanders. One suggests that Warner is lying, noting that she has life about so many other things from her employment history to her ethnic background. Bernie Sanders may be given to saying outrageous things, the theory goes on to suggest, but he is as honest as the day is long.
However, Allahpundit over at Hot Air has a different view.
“I think Warren’s telling the truth about what he said. I also think his opinion that a woman can’t beat Trump is defensible, although I don’t share it. It will very likely be harder for a woman to beat Trump given the appeal his “tough guy” alpha-male persona holds for some voters and his inevitable willingness to attack a woman opponent as soft or whatever.”
Allahpundit also suggests that the Warner hit on Bernie is going to backfire. His supporters are fanatically loyal to him. They remember how Hillary Clinton hornswoggled the nomination from their guy in 2016. They are not going to stand to see that happen again.
