The Trump Administration has announced that it’s putting together a panel of 12 “experts” to advise the president on climate and global warming issues. This panel has garnered a lot of attention – and more than a few skeptics.
- Scientist William Happer will lead the new committee, having been appointed to the post of Senior Director for the National Security Council in September of 2018. He was previously a physics professor at the University of Princeton.
- Many professional climate scientists disagree with Happer’s beliefs about climate change. This is due to a statement Happer is quoted as making in 2014 during a CNBC interview, when he compared climate science to Nazi propaganda. He said, “The demonization of carbon dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler. Carbon dioxide is actually a benefit to the world, and so were the Jews.” As you can imagine, this brought a lot of negative attention – and offended a lot of people.
- Trump believes Happer to be the best in his field and the person who is most qualified for this job. The president needs a leader for this committee who will tell him exactly what he needs to know with no bias. Happer will be in charge of advising the president on how the condition of the climate will affect the future, and how – or whether – that is being influenced by human activity.
- President Trump wants to get to the bottom of global warming claims. He wants facts and proof to back up what scientists are saying. This is one of the reasons why he chose Happer and the other members of the committee. The plan is to reevaluate past claims and conduct their own research on this long-running issue.
